Bug takes place in a motel room on the outskirts of Oklahoma City. Forty-year old Agnes White is living a withdrawn, transient life, working as a waitress in a local saloon. She is down to a few seedy friends who stop by to do drugs and booze it up. Into her life comes Peter Evans — a young man with a secret past. As Agnes and Peter’s relationship grows, Bug delves into the ideas of love, paranoia, and government conspiracy. Bug is a play that plumbs the theatrical genre of naturalism to its furthest depths, plays with the concept that “perception is reality”, and acknowledges the many ways people manipulate the truth for their own self-interest. It ultimately asks how we cope in a world where isolation makes each person’s reality as potent to them as any other.
